Thirteen. For some, it’s an unlucky number, but for girls wrestling head coach Eric Bice, it’s a great number to see. Thirteen is the largest number of girls out for wrestling so far. “I would like to see our girls program get as many numbers as our boys program,” Bice said, but “I am excited for the season.”
Those girls are doing well so far. At the first tournament of the season, seven of those 13 medaled, which is the record so far in school history. At the Norm Manstedt invitational on Jan. 4, seniors Marissa Anderson and Ella Shevlin both medaled in their respective classes.
The size of the team is a drawback when trying to reach another of Bice’s goals: winning a duel at home. On Jan. 11, the girls lost to Norfolk due to open classes, but in the classes that did compete, CHS finished 4-2. This is good news to Bice.
“They all wrestle and practice hard. I don’t have to coach that, which is nice,” Bice said.
The girls have several more away events before the Feb. 3 district match and possible appearances at the state tournament.
