The Special Education department has a lot of staff who work together to help the students be successful in school and in the community. The staff includes Mrs. Kristin Biggs, Mr. Ryan Goetsch, Ms. Brenda Huey, Mrs. Kate Juranek, Ms. Jennifer Kallweit, Mrs. Kim Leibhart, Mrs. Kristi Nelson, Ms. Amber May and Mrs. Jill Sorsen.
Ms. Huey teaches the CLS program and is the JobSite Coordinator here at CHS. The CLS Program is the Curriculum Life Skills Program and it includes life and job skills. She helps teach students how to cook and take care of a home as well as laundry, hygiene, time management, reading recipes, directions and stories, and time and counting money. As the JobSite Coordinator, she places the student at different job sites in the school and the community. One thing this includes in the school is ACE Coffee Shop. Teachers can place coffee orders and the students make the coffee with any necessary help and deliver it to the teachers.
Mr. Goetsch is the Autism Life Skills (ACLS) Program teacher. ACLS is a program for students who have autism or other disabilities and are unable to be successful in the general education classroom and need extra support. His job includes instructing students in daily living skills, functional academics, which help them to be successful after graduation, job skills and social skills.
Mrs. Nelson co-teaches in Social Studies classes. She helps with study strategies, note-taking guidance and assisting all students in the classroom. She also offers Academic Support with Ms. May. Some students have a study period during the day which is when Academic Support takes place. Ms. May and Mrs. Nelson help the students prepare for exams and complete their homework.
Ms. Kallweit primarily focuses on English 11 and 12 and she co-teaches one period of English 12 with Mrs. Kwapnioski and two periods of English 11 with Ms. Meyer. Mrs. Kallweit also teaches English 11 and 12 for the A+ Program and one period of English Skills for resource students. Along with being a teacher, she – and the other special education teachers – is also a caseworker for IEPs (Individual Education Plans) in CHS.
