This Saturday, Sep. 21, Columbus is playing Fremont at UNL Memorial Stadium. Mr. Kwapnioski had information students should know about the event.
First, there will be a pep rally in lot 12 straight east of the stadium, starting around 10:30. This will have free food, sign making, face painting, the fight song, and a video of past highlights. Students are encouraged to come and show their support by attending the pep rally prior to the game.
For tickets, you can either pay cash at the door or buy them online. The online link to buy tickets should have been sent out on Friday. C-Stamps and other types of activity passes will not be accepted. Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for adults, and $3.50 for senior citizens. You should enter through gate 22 before kickoff at noon. Also, if you have not already, you can buy a t-shirt to support the game. The link for ordering was tweeted on Thursday and should be on the school website. The last day to order these t-shirts to ensure everyone gets theirs is Monday, Sep. 16.
This all started with a regular conversation between Mr. Kwapnaski and the Fremont athletic director. While talking, they discussed how cool it would be for the Columbus vs Fremont football game to be played at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. During the conversation, they also talked about moving the game, which was originally on a Friday. Part of their reasoning was that there is a Nebraska football game that Friday and they want as many people as possible to attend.
From that, they decided on Saturday and realized that it was possible to play the game at the University of Lincoln football field. Following this conversation, they sent emails to the athletic directors at UNL asking about the possibility of playing at Memorial Stadium. The UNL athletic director emailed back asking for a time to talk on a Zoom call. On the call, they discussed all of the details and logistics of playing this high school football game at Memorial Stadium. With all of the logistics out of the way, they signed a contract. Now the 105 meeting of Columbus and Fremont football rivalry is being played on Sep 21 at the UNL Memorial Stadium.
