Stunting, spiriting, and hyping up a crowd are all parts of a cheerleader’s job. They strive to get the crowd pumped up and ready for an amazing game. Our cheer team consists of two parts – the Varsity Team and the Sparkles.
Varsity:
The varsity team consists of around 19 girls, ranging from freshman to seniors. Overall, these girls have loved the season so far and can’t wait to keep it going! Brianna Moreno, a freshman, commented, “I feel that it is going awesome with stunts and cheers and especially with our connection.”
During the school year, cheer does more than just cheer at games! They also orchestrate homecoming, and participate in multiple kids clinics. They also prepare posters and practice their state routines on top of cheering at football, basketball, volleyball, and wrestling.
While they love the normal football season, many cheerleaders can’t wait to leave it all on the floor at basketball and wrestling. Emily Mausbach, a senior, confessed, “I cheer on the basketball squad, and no offense to the other sports, but basketball is for sure the most fun to cheer at…Some of my favorite memories are from basketball season, so I just hope that we can create some amazing ones for the underclassmen this year :).”
After basketball season comes State, the most important part of the cheerleading season. This year, their state occurs on Saturday, February 22. Here, teams compete in multiple categories like Game Day, Non-Tumbling and Traditional. The CHS team is competing in Class A Non-Tumbling Traditional. Make your way down to Grand Island February 22 to cheer them on just like they cheer on the school teams!
Ms. Joseph, the coach of the Cheer Squad,
Sparkles:
The Sparkles Cheer Team is considered Unified Cheer. These lovely girls come to different games throughout the season and cheer alongside the Varsity girls. They work very hard to learn the cheers during their practices in order to perform them in front of the school. Brianna, Crystal, and Nave are just three of the many very talented Sparkles girls.
A few of the Varsity cheerleaders assist at Sparkles to make the experience as fun as possible. Mady Tworek, Emily Mausbach, Bri Moreno and Selene Fang all are cheerleaders who participate.
Every single girl who responded exclaimed that the Sparkles are amazing to be with. Selene Fang, a freshman, stated, “I love making new relationships and bonding with the girls, they are all so sweet and kind.” Mausbach expressed, “Getting to know the Sparkles girls has been such a blessing. Each practice is filled with giggles and jokes, and those girls work so hard on all the material that I give them. I wish everyone could get to know these girls like I got to.”
From my personal experience, these ladies are super sweet, and deserve all the enthusiastic support ever! The Sparkles will compete in their state competition the same day as Varsity – February 22. Make sure to go support them as they would love that so much!
Thinking about trying out? Contact Ms. Joseph for more information. Auditions begin around March. Elena Moseman urges everyone with interest to try out, saying, “Overall, I would say do it!!! You get so close with all the girls, make new friends, and get to experience being part of a team!! In the audition, confidence is key to being a cheerleader. If you look like you know what you’re doing and put a smile on your face, the judges will love you so much more!”
