The weather is starting to warm up and snow days are in the past for Columbus Public Schools. Dr. Chip Kay has come forward to say what his priorities and protocol are for calling a snow day for the students and staff of Columbus.
When snow is in the forecast, Kay, the National Weather Service, and the City of Columbus work closely together to keep an eye of the precipitation and conditions. The main points that are looked at very closely are safety of travel, safety of the school property, the impact of timing and severity of weather.
When asked who consults together for the final “Snow Day” decision, Kay says, “The final decision rests with me as the school Superintendent. There are several people I consult with before making any decision including a team of District personnel that report to me on certain parts of the District, the National Weather Service forecast and conference call and the city and county roads department.”
With the most recent snow day we had on March 19, we have reached the limit of four days that we can cancel for weather. If we were to cancel for another occurrence, May 9, which is currently a day off of school, would become a school day to makeup for the lost day.
