The Heartland Athletic Conference hosted their soccer tournament last week, and Columbus did an amazing job!
The girls team, led by Coach Wayman, found an early victory against Fremont. Winning 2-0 against them felt surreal. When asked about his highlight of the game, he declared it was the, “first goal scored by Molly Goc (11th) in our first game against Fremont that was 50 yards away from the goal.”
Abby Jensen, a freshman on the team, has not had much playing time since her injury. However, she has been an amazing support for her team and was a rock this week for them. Even from the sidelines, you found her cheering and congratulating her teammates. Her highlight of the week was, “congratulating everyone for playing their hardest and pushing to the end.”
Unfortunately, the girls came up short on Wednesday against Lincoln Southeast, where they lost 0-2. The girls kept their heads high though, celebrating their unification as a team and their first win. Coach Wayman stated that this weekend was overall, “a good weekend playing very competitive games against good competition. While we didn’t win both our games, we did improve and learn from each game and that should benefit us moving forward for the rest of the season.”
Senior Callen Heule expressed that if she had to make an improvement before her next game, she would, “be stronger mentally and be more confident.”
The boys varsity team struggled in the conference, coming up with two losses. The first, against Lincoln Southeast, was 0-4. The second was against Grand Island, and ended 0-3.
The boys were very down about the losses. Freshman Mario Caballero stated, “I believe we didn’t play to our full potential this weekend. There were moments where we showed promise, but we definitely have areas to improve.” Similarly, Andrell Velasquez, a sophomore, shared, “I think we didn’t do our best at all and didn’t play to our abilities.”
While they felt really down about their losses, the boys are not even close to giving up hope! When asked what they could improve on, Caballero shared, “I’d work on communicating more, building confidence, and passing quickly to improve our game.” Another improvement was shared by Connor Kallweit who said they need to focus – “We just used the two losses as fuel to win the next one.”
If you happen to see a soccer player, make sure to say good job! Both teams played very hard, and are continuing to. Here are some of their upcoming events!
