With fall parent-teacher conferences coming up, students and teachers are doing their parts to prepare. For teachers, this can be quite stressful; they’re entering several grades into the gradebook and working on any other things they might need for conferences. Students might be upping their game. This might look like behaving better over the last few weeks or ensuring they pass their tests and quizzes—all so their parents don’t yell at them.
I went to the counseling office and asked Ms. Uchtman about the typical turnout at conferences. This is specifically from the second semester of the 2024-2025 school year, but she says this represents most conference sessions (yes, even including first semester). 71 out of 364 freshman families attended. 44 of 317 sophomore families attended, 61 out of 328 junior parents came, and 36 out of 285 senior families attended (note these numbers appear smaller due to mid-term graduates).
I also asked a couple of teachers how they’re feeling. Ms. Robertson says she enjoys conferences because they are a chance for students’ parents to see the classroom and get to have a productive conversation with their teachers. She also notes she enjoys conferences far more now—in the classrooms—than in the gym, where they used to be. Mr. Ritter also enjoys conferences because he almost always has good news for parents. He notes that singing is a unique and interactive skill he loves getting to tell parents about.
It’s a busy week here at CHS. Teachers, I know these days are long, but we appreciate all your hard work! Students, enjoy your Thursday and Friday off!
