Golf: Discoverer Girls Golf team is off to its best start in many years. The first half of the season (first 4 weeks) have been busy. The varsity team has competed in six 18-hole events.Varsity is lead by senior Molly Goc, who has placed in the top 10 in each event, and broke the individual visitor course (9H and 18H) records when she shot a -2 under par, 70 at the Beatrice invite, scoring -3 on the front nine. Additionally, the remaining varsity players, senior Emma O’Kane, junior Emily Mowrey, sophomore Abby Jensen, and freshman Stella Sedlacek have produced team scores that broke a 50-year school record (346) scoring a 330 at the GI Invite and have won two team invite team titles at the Kearney Invite & Grand Island Invite.
Junior varsity team – Sophomores Rachel Hoskovec & Meg Weeder, along with freshmen Halle Hughes & Zaylie Schweitzer, have competed in three events, 2-18H & 1-9H, showing improvement each time out on the course.
With four more weeks to go to Districts, the team will continue to work to improve their games to improve scores
This is AMAZING to see!! I can’t wait to see how Girls Golf does at their next few meets!
Football: Week 1 vs Norfolk was an intense rivalry game. Our kids felt like they had a great chance to win this game and were fired up to play. It lived up to the hype as it was very competitive and hard fought. The student section was amazing and provided the kids with a great energy boost. 31-10 over Norfolk was a great start.
Week 2 we ran up against one of the top two teams in the state in Westside. They are loaded with D1 College level players and our kids were excited to test themselves against this type of team. The final was 42-0 in favor of Westside but our kids stood toe to toe with them and battled for 4 quarters.
So excited to see how the rest of the season for football goes!
Boys Tennis: We have played two duals and two invites.
We have faced Grand Island and won 5-4. We hosted South Sioux City and won 9-0.
We attended the Lincoln Northeast Invite and finished 6th out of 12 teams. We then hosted our own Columbus Invite and finished 3rd out of 8 teams. Our #2 Doubles Team won their division in both invites.
Softball: The last few games have gone pretty well. they have been playing well as a team and figuring out what works best for them.
There has definitely been improvement as a team. The underclassmen, especially, have stepped up to fill roles on Varsity with how few girls we have. They have adapted really well to how we work and we have found that we all work really well together.
Her favorite part of the game is my teammates. They have gotten so close this year, and we all know we are there for each other. It feels so much better to play with girls that you know really well and love. It makes the mistakes easier to overcome because you know they all have your back. Their goal for the end of the season is to keep our bond as tight as it is right now, because even if their record isn’t what they want, they will still leave the season knowing they have a group of girls who will always be there.
Speech: Speech is an NSAA sponsored activity which gives students the chance to write, act, and perform speeches at competitions (speech “meets”). There are many events for students to choose from, ranging from informative or persuasive to performing humorous scripts or poetry, as well as some group events. Students are able to both showcase and build upon their strengths and weaknesses, as speech pushes many out of their comfort zones, while allowing them a chance to build a lifelong skill in public speaking.
We hosted an informational meeting about speech recently in which we had a great turnout (about 25 students!), with multiple others communicating that they could not attend. Individual practices may start for students as early as they are ready, at least to brainstorm topics or events in which they may be interested, but competitions do not start until at least December (but typically January through March). We may also attend at least one workshop in November, but these details are still in consideration. We will also be having team practices at least once a week starting in October, and then students are asked to schedule individual meetings with coaches throughout the rest of the week. Practices can be very flexible.
Cross country: Boone Central Invite –
1st meet of the season and for some of the runners it was their first ever 5k. The boys team was missing some of their varsity runners this week so we had to have some of our young runners step up and run varsity. The girls team is inexperienced but they stepped up and ran great. At the end of the day we had 4 medalists.
Girls – Finished 7th out of 10 teams
Melissa Gomez Vazquez placed 11th
Jazmine Hernandez placed 19th
Boys – Finished 5th out of 10 teams
Noah Edwards placed 7th
Landon Lawrence placed 10th
Fremont Invite –
Fremont hosted their first ever twilight race, which was also a first for all on our team. Their meet was large with 21 schools participating and 6 different races. There were reserve (2 mile races), jv and varsity. Their competition was one of the toughest we have faced and will be one of the toughest races all year. They were able to come home with one medal from the night but we also had some pretty big highlights with multiple kids having personal bests.
Medalist – Kierstin Staab finish 3rd in the reserve race.
Other highlights –
Boys Varsity – Landon Lawrence 59th and Noah Edwards 65th out of 131 runners
Boys Junior Varsity – Landyn Parker 179th and Lucius Lighter 189th out 294 runners
Girls Varsity – Melissa Gomez Vazquez 42nd and Jazmine Hernandez 62nd out of 122 runners
Girls JV – Heydi Figueroa-Ramirez 66th, Natasha Lawryanto 71st, Maria Ortega 72nd, out of 164 runners.
