Did you know we have a teacher among the staff who grew up in Germany? And no, it is not the German teacher. Let me introduce you to Ms. Haut, the newest Spanish teacher and spotlight for this Tuesday.
Ms. Haut grew up in a very small town (around 300 people) in Germany. Her hometown is about 2.5 hours north of Munich, one of the most popular cities in Germany. In that town, she grew up, attended school, and discovered her love for the United States. Haut got her bachelor’s degree at a university in Germany in Translation, Culture, and Linguistics.
Her love for the US is what influenced her to move here to get her Master’s degree. In August 2022, Ms. Haut moved from her small town in Germany to Omaha, Nebraska, to obtain her master’s degree in Language Teaching at the University of Nebraska – Omaha. She completed her degree by May of 2024. After finishing her degree, she taught for a year at UNO before taking the opportunity to teach Spanish at Columbus High.
A fun fact about Haut: she loves Christmas! In the interview, she noted, “The holiday season is definitely my favorite part of the year and when it gets closer to Christmas, I spend my evenings watching the classical cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies.” Even when it is not Christmas time, Haut has many other ways to create joy. She loves to travel and has travelled to many countries including England, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Costa Rica, and Brazil. When she’s not travelling or watching a cheesy Hallmark movie, she likes to bake, be in nature, and work out.
If you thought Haut was cool before, just wait until you hear this! As you can guess, she can speak multiple languages, and enjoys working on them in her free time. The main three she can speak are English, Spanish, and German. In fact, she is so fluent in all three that she read the Harry Potter books (her favorite series by the way!) in each of those languages. That is so cool!!!
Haut’s favorite part of teaching is getting to know all of her students, their personalities and interests, and their unique ways of learning. She commented, “I am so passionate about languages, I just really enjoy sharing my experiences with my students, so that I can hopefully make them see how rewarding speaking another language is.” Just hearing her say that made me want to hop back into a Spanish class right there!
The next time you see Ms. Haut in the hallway, make sure to say hi! Don’t forget to ask her about German soft pretzels – she said the ones in Germany are better than any she has tried in the US!
