Extra! 🗞️ Extra! 🗞️
Good morning, Discoverers! As you may know, the Columbus Middle School musical, Newsies Jr., is this weekend. What you may not know is that the show was entirely choreographed by CHS student (and also member of the AnchorNews staff) Savannah Klee. Today, you will get a glimpse into what the choreography process looked like, and also see what it was like for Klee to have such a big job.
“Back in July, I was very nervous when Mrs. Ditter asked to choreograph her show. Obviously, I have never choreographed an entire show, so it was a massive step out of my comfort zone,” Klee notes. In the past, she has choreographed bits and pieces of the show, but she has always been in the assistant choreographer role, never the main choreographer.
Klee very quickly found joy in her role. She said, “It was a lot of fun to be in the role. I really enjoyed being able to go ‘on tour’—to the elementaries—with them. They brought so much energy and positivity that it made the audience engaged, which was so fun to see, especially as it was my own choreography that brought them to life. They’re full of energy, and they’re so fun to be around.”
Choreographing the show will forever be a very meaningful experience. As Klee leaves high school, she plans to pursue arts management with a concentration in theatre. She remarked, “I hope to continue choreographing in the future because it is genuinely one of my favorite things. This experience has taught me so much, and Ms. Ditter has been a great mentor.”
