Believe it or not, it is that time of year again, or if you’re new to the school, welcome to registration.
Things are changing this year in the way counseling is done. Currently, the way it is divided is by grades. Next year, the counseling is divided alphabetically; basically, this means you’re working with the same counselor until you graduate.
Now that you’re looking at your sheet, the best thing you can do for yourself is to turn it in with classes you actually want. If you are an underclassman, I would recommend getting into as many prerequisite classes, because once you get into your last years of high school, it becomes a challenge to get into those classes.
Furthermore, actually pick classes that you want and not just to fill in the boxes. The master schedule, which is basically all classes available, is based on popularity and request. Do NOT pick a class just because of a friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or even a teacher. It is not worth it in the end. Actually, pick classes based on your interests.
Finally, if you’re someone who doesn’t think turning in the registration paper is important, believe me when I say the system will place you in random classes that you would have never picked.
Counselors will not change your class for any of the following reasons:
- You didn’t pick the class (you did… or you didn’t turn in your sheet; therefore, you don’t get a say)
- I don’t have friends in this class (you’ll be fine, try making new friends)
- I don’t like the teacher (probably the only time in your schedule that can fit the class).
If you’re wondering why you should listen to me, take it as insider information. Having a mother as a high school counselor, I got that advice throughout my whole high school time.
As always, come back to AnchorNews for whatever you might need throughout the rest of the year.
