We are nearing the end of the first semester, which also means that we will soon be saying some bittersweet goodbyes. While most of the senior class will be graduating this upcoming May, we have many who will be walking out the doors of Columbus High for the last time next week.
While goodbyes are difficult, they open the doors to vast new opportunities. The end of high school is just one of many more chapters to come. Many of our midterm grads have big plans.
Ashlynn Cannon: She reflects on this last semester as chill and fun. Her plans after high school are to work full-time as a CNA and part-time at JCPenney. She will utilize her first semester out of high school to earn enough money to attend college in the fall. She will be attending Wayne State to study radiology. A side goal she has is to become fluent in Spanish. She’s going to miss the people and routine from high school, but she’s looking forward to being able to focus on herself and her future.
Kammie Gennrich: Gennrich said her senior year has gone by slowly, and it’s very boring. After she graduates, she plans to work right away then go to college next fall. What she’s going to miss most about CHS is her friends and the chicken sandwiches.
Grant Lawrence: Lawrence described this semester as a combination of fun and stress. In his gap semester, he plans to intern at Loup Power District to gain experience and save money for college. Next fall, he’ll be attending Northeast Community College to study in their Utility Line program. He’s going to miss his friends and teachers who have all had such a big impact on his school life.
Jalysa Parker: Parker says this semester has been a mix of emotions—busy, stressful, and emotional. She says that it’s been stressful to balance work and school, but it’s all been worth it. After graduation, she’s taking a gap semester to work nearly full-time at Paws and Claws. She notes, “Working with animals has become such a huge part of my identity and life, and I want to move toward a long-term career in that work. My goal is to stay involved in hands-on care while also learning more about behavior, medical needs, and advocacy. I’m so excited for the chance to focus fully on something I’m passionate about.” What she’s going to miss most about CHS is theatre; it’s been a large part of her life and it’s going to be a big step to let it go.
Samantha Peterson: Peterson said her senior year has been stressful, and she feels like everything has gone by so fast. She also remarked, “I’m scared to actually be out of school and on my own.” Her plans after high school are to take a gap year to work and then attend college in Norfolk. She’s going to miss her teachers, notably Ms. Long, Ms. Rabourn, and Ms. Alarcon.
Eliot Yang: Yang has said this semester has been very easy but busy with projects. He chose to graduate mid-term so he can focus on college visits across the country and spend time with distant relatives. Once he chooses a college, he will study architecture.
To the midterm grads, we will miss you all greatly. Good luck with all your future endeavors.
