Welcome back to Teacher Tuesday; it’s our last one before spring break—we’re almost there! Today, let’s dive into the world of money with Personal Finance and Accounting teacher, Ms. Tunink.
Tunink has always known that she wanted to be a teacher. She noted, “When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a teacher. My 6th-grade teacher discouraged it, saying, ‘You don’t want to be a teacher. They don’t make any money.’ In my senior year of high school, I took an accounting class and absolutely loved it, so I decided to major in accounting in college.”
However, during her sophomore year of college, a switch flipped. She continued, “My first college-level accounting class was in the first semester of my sophomore year, and I spent a lot of time with classmates who would ask me for help. I realized how much I enjoyed helping others like this, so I called my parents and told them I was thinking about changing my major. Their response was, ‘It’s about time. Get your coaching endorsement, too.’ I didn’t want to completely start over and still loved accounting, so I stuck with the business part of my major and changed it to Business Education. If I had gone into education from the beginning, I probably would have chosen Elementary Education, but I now know that high school was definitely the route I was meant to take.”
She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and got her bachelor’s degree in Business Education with a minor in Coaching. She also has two master’s degrees, both from Wayne State College—a Master of Science in Education in Curriculum Instruction: Instructional Leadership, and the other a Master of Business Administration with a focus in Public Accounting.
This is her 18th year teaching, all spent at CHS. She now teaches Accounting, Personal Finance, and Personal Financial Planning. She has also taught Keyboarding, Career Education, Career Seminar, and Intro to Business. She said, “My favorite part of teaching is getting to help students figure out what they want to do and what steps they should take after high school, plus helping them figure out how to make better choices in their future, especially with their finances.”
Outside of the school day, she is also the adviser for FBLA, which is the Future Business Leaders of America. She thoroughly enjoys this experience, noting, “My favorite part of FBLA is watching students learn and grow, not just in Business, but in their leadership skills, confidence, and professionalism.”
Outside of school, she enjoys keeping busy and spending time with her family. She remarked, “I spend a lot of time with my family and taking my girls to their various sports and activities. I play in a volleyball league in the winter and a golf league in the summer. I love scrapbooking, reading, artistic Bible journaling, and crafting. I’m a huge Husker fan and enjoy following several of their sports, along with my whole family.”
That’s all for this week’s Teacher Tuesday. I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about Ms. Tunink, and don’t be afraid to stop by and say hi!
