As many of the Columbus students know, the election for the bond I wrote about last week was this last Tuesday. The bond is the only way that the school district would be allowed to expand and create the intermediate school.
Unfortunately, the bond did not pass. The total of the NO votes was 3,074 and the total YES votes was 1,963. While there were 678 uncounted at the time I collected the numbers, it would not have been enough to overturn the decision.
Superintendent Dr. Chip Kay posted a statement on his feelings about the decision. He shared, “Though we are disappointed, we respect the voice of our community. The need for addressing enrollment growth and facility challenges remains, and your involvement in this process has been invaluable in helping us understand the concerns, priorities, and perspectives across our district.”
While many are disappointed with the outcome, the issues we were trying to resolve still remain. Even in my classes, new students are getting added each week, and classrooms are becoming more crowded. Hopefully, the next bond will be able to lead CPS to a better solution in the future!
