Officially, most winter sports began practicing Monday, Nov 17. This is not the case for Unified Bowling. In fact, they had their first meet yesterday, where they did amazing!
Emily Mowrey, a junior “partner” in Unified Bowling, explained how it works to me. She explained, “In a Unified (also called Baker) game, the groups usually consist of 4 or 5 bowlers. In each Baker game, there are three contestants, where there is at least one ‘athlete.’ The bowlers alternate frames, with the “athlete” bowling frames 1, 2, 3, and 10, the next contestant bowling frames 4 to 6, and the third contestant bowling frames 7, 8, and 9. After the first game is completed, the “partners” are switched around with others within their group, so everyone has a chance to bowl! At the end, all of the points are added up to see which team is the winner.”
After giving an incredible explanation of the game, I asked Mowrey about her favorite part of Unified Bowling. Mowrey competes in varsity bowling as well, but she commented how much she loves the relaxed and fun-filled atmosphere of Unified Bowling. She also mentioned how much she loves connecting with the athletes on the team, inside and outside of the bowling alley.
I also spoke with Randy Champlin, one of the athletes in CHS’ program, about his experience in bowling. When I asked him his favorite part, Champlin said “I like to be King of the Bowlers and all of the friends I have made in bowling. I use the powers of Space Godzilla to bowl well.” Champlin also mentioned that he loves Unified Bowling because it is his “favorite sport.” Don’t worry – Champlin is not all talk. The highest score Champlin has received while playing is 162–how incredible!
Unified Bowling’s next event is on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 9am, at our very own Westbrook Lanes. If you are able, go support these talented students as they show us what they’ve got outside of the school zone.
