The Columbus High sports have been doing an amazing job in their competitions, winning games and breaking records left and right. One thing that every student-athlete will acknowledge: it is so much easier to win a game when the crowd is enthusiastic. The students who get the crowd hyped for what is to come are generally overshadowed by the sports they encourage, so let’s talk about them. The Diamond Dance Team and Columbus High Cheer Team have been making moves at their individual competitions, winning accolades with each performance.
Due to conflicts in their schedule, the CHS cheer team has only been able to attend one competition – Heartland Championships in Lincoln, NE. There, they performed their Non-Tumbling routine that will be performed at the state level, and received 3rd place in the Class A division. Elena Moseman, a senior cheerleader, commented, “Practice makes progress. We have improved so much since the start of learning the routine and this performance really highlighted all our hard work. We did really well with cheering as a team, not only for ourselves but for each other. Overall, it was the best we ever performed but there are still so many ways to improve and grow before State!”
When the Cheer Team is not on the floor performing their non-tumbling routine, you can find them on the sidelines, cheering on both wrestling and basketball during the winter season. The athletes split their team in half for these events, and learn the individual cheers for the sport they are encouraging.
Looking beyond the sideline and into the halftime show, we come to the Diamond Dancers. The Diamonds have worked hard all season and have competed at a few different competitions. Recently, the Diamonds have attended UDA Regionals and the GICC Showcase. At UDA Regionals, the Diamonds walked away with a 2nd place trophy in High Kick, and 4th in Jazz. GICC was not a judged competition, but the team bonded over their best performance yet, and received rave reviews from their “judges.”
The last competition they attended was Midland’s Best of the Best showcase, where they won first place in both Jazz and Kick. The girls got a chance to recompete their Jazz routine for the “Best of the Best” trophy. Though they did not end up bringing it home, they walked away with the highest score of the entire day – that’s a huge accomplishment!
Speaking of the Diamonds, their main event of the year, Jam the Gym, is right around the corner. Come support local dance studios, cheer teams, and school dance teams on Feb. 1, when the event kicks off. It begins at 2pm, and it will be an amazing opportunity to support your peers (who knows, you might even see some of your non-dancer peers in silly dance costumes!)
Both the cheer and dance team will be attending the Nebraska State Dance and Cheer Competition over parent-teacher conference weekend. The Cheer team competes on Thursday, Feb. 19, during the morning, and the Diamonds compete throughout the day on that Saturday.
