Good morning, Discoverers! Here is your weekly dose of what is going on in the world today! There is a lot, so get reading.
Snow:
The “snow-magedon” Platte County was rumored to face this past weekend was a bust (at least for Columbus). Though the prediction was 5-7 inches of snow, we were only hit with 2 inches of snowfall. While the weathermen happened to be wrong on this one, the same cannot be said for the Northeastern US states.
The mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, called a local state of emergency on Sunday, halting all travel in the city. Mamdani was concerned about the snowstorm to come, because there were a predicted 12-24 inches of snow and high wind speeds. This could mean low visibility for the already crazy NYC traffic and the additional possibility of power outages.
The snowstorm would affect many other US states, including New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and parts of Connecticut. Some places had already lost power due to these harsh conditions, so it seems Mamdani’s worries were justified. To make sure people stay away from these astronomical conditions, all flights to and from the Northeast states were delayed until the storm clears. Logistically, the storm passed by Tuesday morning, so the Northeast can be restored to its post snow-pocalypse glory.
Mexico:
Just south of the US border, panic and fear are filling the land. The leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as El Mencho, was captured and killed by the Mexican army on Sunday. He was the boss of one of the fastest-growing drug networks, trafficking many illegal drugs throughout the neighboring countries.
This feat was not easy for the Mexican army, and it has led to major retaliation from the cartel. The members are blocking roads needed for travel, and setting fire to cars and buildings throughout the area. There have also been twenty-five Mexican National Guard members who have been found dead since the capture, likely being targeted attacks by the cartel.
Due to this violence, schools in the Jalisco area were shut down for safety, and flights to and from Mexico were cancelled fast. So, if you have a Spring Break trip to Cancun planned, make sure to be watching the news and planning ahead!
