Last Thursday, a celebrity graced the halls of Columbus High. This man, also known as the “ACT Guy,” helped prepare the junior class for the official ACT happening on April 7. His name is John Baylor.
John Baylor was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. At the age of four, he moved to a town just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, where he attended and graduated from Middlesex School.
After graduating high school, Baylor attended Stanford University, where he was a part of many collegiate theatrical productions. This experience led him to move to New York to try and pursue a theatrical career after graduation.
He worked for Wall Street as a sales representative while trying to get his acting career to take off. Though his career in acting never showed true success, it opened doors for him that he would have never imagined. He became a sportscaster in LA while balancing small acting jobs, as well as being a waiter. It wasn’t until his late 20’s, when someone approached Baylor about being a tutor for their children, that Baylor started the beloved program OnToCollege.
OnToCollege, previously known as John Baylor Test Prep, is a program that helps prepare students for national tests like the ACT and SAT. It gives helpful tips and tricks on how to tackle the difficult tests, so that the student can achieve their highest score possible.
This program is actually why John Baylor was at CHS! Armed with the knowledge of OnToCollege, John Baylor travels around the country teaching students his skills and tricks for the ACT test.
A rumor that has never been confirmed or denied: John Baylor never actually took the ACT test in his high school years! I don’t know if this is true, but even if he didn’t take it, Baylor is incredibly proficient in teaching how to be a good test taker.
